Evaluation System

Home

Home

The grade awarded to a student in any particular course is based on continuous evaluation of his/her performance throughout the semester. The Continuous Evaluation System includes assessment of performance in assignments, quizzes, class tests, project work, reports, presentations etc. The distribution of marks is as follows:

(a) Assignments, quizzes, class tests, project work, reports, presentation etc.   10
(b) Class attendance   5
(c) First mid-term test   10
(d) Second mid-term test   15
(e) Semester final examination   60

Total Marks

100

At the end of as each semester, students have to sit for a Semester Final Examination. Generally the duration of the examination of each course is three hours. The total marks secured by a student in a course is the sum total of the marks of Semester final examination, mid-term examinations, class tests, assignments, quizzes, reports, presentations etc. The results are calculated on a 4.0 scale of GPA for each course and CGPA for the final ranking.

The equivalence of the Grade Point Average (GPA) or the Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) is shown below:

Numerical Grade Letter Grade Grade Point
80% or Above A+ (A Plus) 4.00
75% to less than 80% A (Regular) 3.75
70% to less than 75% A- (A Minus) 3.50
65% to less than 70% B+ (B Plus) 3.25
60% to less than 65% B (Regular) 3.00
55% to less than 60% B- (B Minus) 2.75
50% to less than 55% C+ (C Plus) 2.50
45% to less than 50% C (Regular) 2.25
40% to less than 45% D (Regular 2.00
Less than 40% F (Fail) 0.00

Vis-à-vis the traditional system of gradation, CGPA 2.00 is equivalent to 3rd Class, 2.50 is equivalent to 2nd Class and 3.00 is equivalent to 1st class.

Repeating a Course:
A Student receiving a Failing (F) grade in any course needs to repeat that course and obtain a minimum ‘D’ grade to meet the degree requirements. A Student may improve his/her grades D, D+ and C- by reappearing in the examinations that would follow, on the recommendation of the faculty. In the case of an improvement examination, the better result of the two examinations will be taken in to account.
