The world celebrates 8^th of September every year as the International Literacy Day. Elaborate programs including rallies seminars, symposia etc. are organized on this day with a view to create public awareness about the importance of literacy in the national life. Each year special theme is focused on this day. Last year's celebration focused on “Literacy as Freedom”, linking it to development. It was the 38^th anniversary of this day. It underscored the importance of literacy and basic education as a major tool in building a cohesive and peaceful society for the 21st Century.
